What is Diwali

दीप + आवली
a row of lamps

On the darkest night of the year — Amavasya, the new moon of the month of Kartik — homes across India and around the world are lit with rows of little clay lamps. Doorsteps bloom with rangoli, sweets pass from hand to hand, and the sky fills with light.

It is a festival of many stories, all saying the same thing: light wins over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance.

Chapter one · अयोध्या

The prince who walked away

Long ago, in the golden city of Ayodhya, lived Prince Rama — kind, brave and loved by everyone. On the eve of his crowning, an old promise sent him into the forest for fourteen years.

Sita, his wife, and Lakshmana, his brother, refused to let him walk alone.

Chapter two · वन

The golden deer

Years passed among rivers and sages. One day a deer of shimmering gold appeared at the edge of their hut. Sita longed for it, and Rama followed it deep into the trees.

It was a trick. While he was gone, the ten-headed king Ravana carried Sita away to his island kingdom of Lanka.

Chapter three · हनुमान

A leap across the ocean

Hanuman, the mightiest of Rama’s friends, grew as tall as a mountain and leapt across the sea. In a grove in Lanka he found Sita and placed Rama’s ring in her hand.

A small ring, carrying a big promise: he is coming.

Chapter four · राम सेतु

A bridge of floating stones

An army of vanaras carried rocks to the shore. On each one they wrote a single name — राम — and every stone floated.

Stone by stone, a bridge stretched all the way to Lanka.

Chapter five · विजय

Light meets darkness

On the battlefield of Lanka the war raged for days. At last Rama drew his bow, and a single arrow of light found its mark. Ravana fell.

Sita was free. Good had won.

Chapter six · दीपावली

The night a city lit up

They flew home in the Pushpaka Vimana, arriving on the darkest night of the year. So that their king would not return to darkness, the people of Ayodhya placed a lamp on every doorstep, every wall, every step down to the river.

A row of lights. दीपावली. Diwali.
